The Pharisee & The Tax Collector

The Pharisee & The Tax Collector

On the outside, the Pharisee has his whole life put together. But is that what God really desires from us? Does God need us to be perfect in every way and polished? Does he need our lofty prayers and loud acts of righteousness? Or does he need a humble and contrite heart?

Luke 18:13
Jesus watched closely as the Pharisees walked proudly through the courtyard. They asked Jesus about these "sinners," hoping for approval. Jesus didn't fall for it. Instead, he told a story. Phinehas, dressed in fancy clothes, represents those who focus on looking religious but ignore God in their hearts. His prayers sounded good, but they were full of pride. When we think about Phinehas, we should check our hearts. Do we judge our spirituality by what others see? Judging our spirituality by what others see is dangerous because it prevents us from seeing our need for God's help. Now, look at Simeon. He knew he was broken and needed God's forgiveness. His simple prayer showed his humility. Simeon's prayer teaches us to be humble and honest with God. We don't earn God's love by being good. We get it because we need it. Remember that prayer isn't about impressing God. It's about asking for help because we know we need it.
